Trek grades explained:

We grade our treks from 1 to 4, each trek receives a grade depending on the difficulty of terrain and numbers of days of sustained trekking. We have graded the Tour of the Vanoise as grade 4.


Grade 4: Demanding, an excellent level of fitness and stamina required for big mountain days with continued and substantial height gain and descent of over + or -1500 mts per day plus sustained trekking over difficult terrain.

Tour of the Vanoise: Self guided

France's first national park this area of the Western Alps is a largely unknown jewel and well worth the effort. The Tour of the Vanoise takes you into high and remote places trekking from hut to hut in un-spoilt, tranquil and stunningly beautiful surroundings. This 80 klm tour is a real challenge, the terrain is not for the faint hearted, steep arêtes and exposed traverses makes the this tour a real adventure.

What is self guided trekking?

This self-guided Tour of the Vanoise offers the independent and more experienced mountain walker a real adventure trekking though France's first national park. We take the hassle out of all the planning & preparation, we book your accommodation and meals, give you unlimited expert advise and supply you will all the necessary information before you depart. Supplying you with detailed itinerary, route cards, emergency and language cards, IGN 1:25,000 maps.

Our itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Champagny en Vanoise. Accommodation: Hotel, twin/double room, B&B.


Day 2: Trek from Champagny en Vanoise via the Col de la Bauche de Mio 2534m to Champagny en Haute. Distance: 14k, Height gain: +1300m, Descent: -1000m. Accommodation: Gite, dormitories, half board (evening meal & breakfast).


Day 3: Trekking from the Gite du Bois to Refuge Grand Bec 2403m going via the passage de la Grande Marianne 2750m & the Point de Meribel. Distance: 10k, Height gain: +1400m, Descent: -500m. Accommodation: Refuge, dormitories, half board.


Day 4: Trekking from the Refuge Grand Bec to Refuge Col de Vanoise (Felix Fauvre) 2516m via the Col Lechaux, Col Noir & Lac Long. Distance: 12k, Height gain: +710m, Descent: -550m. Accommodation: Refuge, dormitories, half board.


Day 5: Trekking from the Refuge Col de Vanoise to the Refuge de la Valette 2550m via Lac des Assiettes, Col du Grand Marchet & Col de la Valette. Distance: 12k, Height gain: +750m, Descent: -700m. Accommodation: Refuge, dormitories, half board.


Day 6: Trekking from Refuge de la Valette to the viallage of Pralognan via Chalets des Nants & Refuge Repoju. Distance: 14k, Height gain: +200m, Descent: -1200m. Accommodation: Hotel, twin/double room, half board.


Day 7: Trekking from Pralognan via the Couloir la Grand Pierre & the Crete de Mont Chavel 2400m to the village of Bozel. Distance: 16k, Height gain: +1100m, Descent: -1500m. Accommodation: Gite, dormitories, half board.

Tailor made itineraries

Does the itinerary suit your needs? perhaps you require additional rest days or would like to start or finish in a different location. Its sometimes a good idea to add in a extra day before the trek starts or after it finishes to explore the area fully. Let us know what you have in mind and we can tailor the self guided trek to suit you (additional costs will apply if extra nights are required).

Group bookings

Private group bookings are available at a date to suit you. If you have more than 4 people in your group and wish to select your own start date thats not a problem, let us know your requiremets and we will tailor make a trek for you. Discounts are available for group bookings, please ask for further details.

Solo trekkers

It is possible to provide self guided treks for solo trekkers however when trekking alone you must be proficient in navigation (use of map, compass & altimeter) in case of bad weather conditions where visability and route finding can be difficult. There will be a single suppliment added to the self-guided trek price for nights when in hotels and single rooms are required. 

Bag transfers

We offer a bag transfer service for those who do not want to carry a multi-day rucksack, this is available on certain treks at an additional cost per person. Please ask for more information.
